1.1 I’ve never role-played, what is a play-by-post forum?
Play-by-Post is a typically what you would call a ‘Message Board’ game. It consists of a world that is spread out over a series of Forum Categories (Named Locations) and Threads (Individual Scenes/Stories). Role-playing is when you assume a character and all of its quirks and personalities to created a story with other players who have also assumed identities of made-up characters. Instead of reading about a location in a story, you get to write your own story in locations of that story.

 • Category Forum: Locations within the Game
 • Threads: Individual Scenes and Stories
 • Topics: What the scene is about, who is invited and if it is private.

1.1a How does a play-by-post forum work?
Playing in a play-by-post forum based game is simple. It is turn based in the order of the posts as the characters entered the scene. You take turns posting (unless a character has denoted that they are present but merely watching). Everyone should wait for the next person in the posting order to post before reacting. This can be time consuming if there are more than 3 characters in a scene, make sure everyone understands the posting order to help keep the scene consistent.

2.1 What is Meta-Gaming?
In role-playing games, meta-gaming is an “out of character” action where a player’s character makes use of knowledge that the player is aware of but that the character is not meant to be aware of. Meta-gaming is using OOC knowledge in role-play thoughts, actions, or behaviour. Meta-gaming is a frequent issue in forum role-playing games. It often occurs with new players who do not know to keep player knowledge out of IC interactions. However, seasoned players do sometimes intentionally use OOC information to give their character an advantage.

Another form of Meta-Gaming is posting a characters reaction FOR THEM. If you are in a scene with another character and you slap them or hit them with magic, you CANNOT react for them. You must wait for the other player to decide what his/her character is going to do about it. You may attempt to punch a character, it will be up to the response of whom you are trying to hit to decide if they dodged the attack or was actually hit. The reverse of this is always dodging. Realistically if someone swings at you often enough, they will hit. Always ‘winning’ and never getting hurt is also a form of Meta-Gaming.

2.1a How do I prevent myself from Meta-Gaming?
We cannot stress enough that you need to educate yourself on what exactly Meta-Gaming is. Please read the following websites so you understand the concept of it. You will be able to read other players scenes and stories, you will not be able to use that information unless your character was in that scene. Unfortunately the ability to read others threads is the most abused form of playing in a play-by-post and is not tolerated in our game.

3.0 Help, I’m confused, how do I use the Forum?
We understand that using a new forum can be confusing. If you need any help with changing your avatar or finding anything it is alright to ask. We also suggest that you look for your answers in the HELP SECTION of the forum, which tells you how to do just about everything on the forum.

3.0a How do I view the most recent posts/threads?
We have taken a screen shot of the navigation on the bottom of the site. If you scroll to the bottom of the board you will see a place where you can see recent threads and topics, mark all threads as read and see who is online. Below that is a shout box. We are lucky to have members who are international so there should always be someone coming around soon to help. Leaving a message in Ask Peeves is best if no one is immediately online.

4.0 Is is possible to change the name of a thread after you have posted it?
You should be able to click edit on the original post to change the topic. If you find that it is not possible, simply ask a Guardian and we will be happy to change it to whatever you wish.

4.0a Can things be said in a thread without everyone seeing, just a few? (Spoiler Tag)
Unfortunately the nature of the forum beast is that everyone can read your stories. Some players enjoy reading forum games like fan-fiction so things that remain hidden are not really hidden. You can use the Spoiler Tag
What you wish to hide
and that will hide it from immediate view. The only other true way to hide something is to send it to the other character via an OWL Message. The only issue with that is the Guardians may need to ask what was seen and/or said to verify if someone has actually seen, heard or obtained an item.

4.0b How is a locked thread made?
Once a thread/scene/story is over please make the last post something similar to [scene over]. This will notify the Guardians that they need to lock the thread so nobody else wanders into it. This will also tell other players that there is nothing else going on in that scene that can be interacted with.

4.0c I have a screen name. I have a character name. How do I post with the least confusion?
When you sign up we request that the username is similar to the character name you want to use. Once you post a character for creation under a new username a Guardian will edited your Displayed Name so it syncs up with your character. You can have multiple character names under the same email address, simply register a new character with the same email you originally used to sign up to the forum. You can also change your Displayed Name under your profile. You can use the HELP SECTION to find out how to do it, if you’re stuck. Or you can simply ask a Guardian for help.

4.0d I have seen three main worlds here, and I am curious about how much they blend.
There is a treaty with the various Humans and Creatures in our game. They can interact if you wander into different parts of the world, but overall they are intended to stay within their own societies. Occasionally there is a special forum plot/plot game for everyone to come in and play together such as ‘Hogwarts Winter Ball’. This is one of the few times where we want the games to mix, we believe it adds an interesting level of interaction and upholds the International Wizarding Councils request of ‘Harmony’ among the different types of characters. Chaos can ensue, most of the time everyone is reasonable and it works out just fine.

4.0e Multiple Characters and Ideas, how do I juggle them?
If you are new to Role-playing we request that you stick to one character and develop it until you are comfortable that you can juggle more than one. Each character has goals and should be seeking to form strong relationships with different characters to flush out their lives. We discourage characters from knowing themselves (one of your characters cannot interact with or do anything to benefit another character you also play).

Depending on the situation your character may know a character that one of your other characters also plays with. DO NOT mention your own character or do anything to mix story-lines as this is Meta-Gaming.
